An internship interview is a specific occasion, and its dress expectations may differ from an ordinary workday. Start with any instructions in your invitation. If the employer has not provided guidance, ask the recruiter or coordinator what level of dress is appropriate. This is especially useful when the role spans office, customer-facing or practical settings.
Let the employer set the level of formality
Do not assume business casual is suitable for every interview. A more formal employer may expect a suit, while another may explicitly request a less formal outfit. Follow that guidance and avoid treating a general styling article as a substitute for the organisation’s requirements. Harvard’s professionalism guidance also distinguishes formal interview expectations from everyday workplace dress.
Prepare the full outfit in advance
Choose clothes that are clean, in good condition and comfortable when sitting. If you wear a jacket, check shoulder movement and how it sits when buttoned. With trousers, check the waistband while seated and the hem with your intended shoes. Make sure your top sits comfortably under any layer and does not need repeated adjustment.
Try everything together a few days ahead, including footwear and the bag you will carry. Allow time for any washing or pressing required by the care label. Avoid relying on an untested delivery arriving just before your appointment; an outfit you already own and know fits can be a more dependable option.
Plan for the interview format
For an in-person interview, consider the journey, weather and whether you will walk between buildings. Keep practical outdoor layers separate from the outfit you will wear in the meeting. For a video interview, check your camera framing and lighting with your chosen outfit. Dress for the whole interview, including the possibility that you may need to stand up.
Use clothing to support your preparation
Once the outfit is ready, focus on researching the role and practising your answers. Clothes should let you concentrate on the conversation. If you need suitable separates, explore men’s trousers, women’s blouses and tops or coordinated suits, then check that the individual style meets the employer’s expectations.
